On Saturday night, USF pulled out a win against Florida International University, but not by much. In the final minutes of the game, USF scored the game winning touchdown. Excitement filled Rayjay and Bulls fans chanted happily. That night not only secured the Bulls a 2-0 record, but it also provided me with some important realizations about my college career...
In my first semester of my fourth year at USF I am beginning preparations for a summer graduation; preparations that include studying for the LSAT, the law school entrance exam and unfortunately preparations that don’t provide much time for fun. Between work and school, I sometimes find myself ready to pull my hair out. Reasonably, I was excited about a Saturday night off. Since being a student at the university, I have never attended a football game, so I figured I'm off, I haven’t been, why not? So a couple of my girlfriends and I filled our pockets with cash, for the $7.50 beers, and headed out.
There wasn’t a person in site not decked out in green and gold. The crowd was loud; our seats were great; we were ready for a good time.
Unfortunately, FIU opened the game with a touchdown, and their lead didn’t end there. For the most part, the score board was in favor of FIU. Ironically this only added to the excitement. The angry guys behind us tortured the FIU players relentlessly. Insults included Screech Powers and the butchering of last names. But who am I kidding, it was pretty funny.
It was a close game and by half time our voices were nearly gone. That didn’t stop us, in fact I think we just screamed louder and laughed at each others hoarse tone. I was having a great time and for a while I forgot about all my stresses. I wasn’t thinking about homework, blogs, the LSAT, my job, or law school applications. Nope none of that mattered. Rather, my attention was focused on the student section of the stadium.
The end zone, the section reserved for USF students, was nearly full. Not only was it the loudest section, but also the most spirited. Outfits ranged from yellow bikini tops with green bottoms, to hula skirts and coconut bras (something about it was festive), and to full body green and gold body paint. It is my belief that the majority of them had probably had quite a few of those $7.50 beers I mentioned before. But that’s beside the point. Watching them only filled me awkward feelings. Ok, I dare admit that I was jealous. They were living the college life, or so I assumed. And though I have great friends, I have never lived the “dream” college life. At this point I was half way to my epiphany.
The Bulls came back from the half with fury. I guess they weren’t ready to accept defeat. In the last three minutes of the game USF added 7 points and the lead to the board. It wasn’t over yet however. Our defense now had the task of preventing FIU from even field goal yardage. So they asked for the crowds help, “Make some noise” the jumbotron read, and that we did. In fact, one fan made the lower level his stage by standing on the railing while yelling get up and flexing his bicep. It was hysterical.
In an attempt to avoid redundancy, I will sum this whole story up. I had a lot of fun that night, and I came to the realization that I don’t have enough fun. My concerns about work, school, and the future often hinder my ability to be carefree. So I came to the conclusion that I need to find a balance; a happy medium between work, school, and play. Now the challenge becomes change…
