A twist on Maria's Ephiphany!!

Excitement filled Rayjay stadium as the final minutes of the game clock ticked. With seconds to spare the USF Bulls scored the winning touchdown that would secure their 2-0 record. Aside from the importance of this game, it provided a crucial insight into my future.

College is supposed to be filled with parties, school spirit and socialization. Unfortunately, as I find myself pressed for the deadlines of a summer graduation, the stress accompanied by college has consumed me, and I find myself left with no time to enjoy this experience.

I have never attended a football game in my four years at USF therefore, when propositioned with the idea of $7.50 beers and fun with the girlfriends I couldn’t resist. The crowd alone was enough to engage everyone in school spirit. Green and gold filled the stadium. Outfits ranged from yellow bikini tops with green bottoms, to hula skirts and coconut bras (something about it was festive), and to full body green and gold body paint. There was not a person there who wasn’t ready to have fun!

Unfortunately, FIU opened the game with a touchdown, and their lead didn’t end there. For the most part, the score board was in favor of FIU. Ironically this only added to the excitement. The angry guys behind us tortured the FIU players relentlessly. Insults included Screech Powers and the butchering of last names. But who am I kidding, it was pretty funny.

The game was close and our voices were drained from screaming but nothing would stop the crowd from showing their school spirit. The excitement of the game gave me a moment to let go of all my stresses and enjoy my college experience. Homework, the LSAT, my job and law school applications were the furthest thing from my mind for once.

My attention was focused on the student section of the stadium and the intensity of the game. I am sure the mass consumption of $7.50 beers was significant to the night, yet that was beside the point. Ironically I felt a little jealous. They were carefree and living the typical college life, which I had failed to experience. Although I have many wonderful friends I have let deadlines and priorities of college take away the fun and enjoyment of an average college student.

In the midst of Rayjay stadium my epiphany was emerging.

Ready to accept defeat, the Bulls came back from the half with fury. With three minutes to spare, USF added 7 points and the lead to the board. It wasn’t over yet however. Our defense now had the task of preventing FIU from even field goal yardage.

Turning to the crowd for their support, they asked us to “Make some noise.” Heart felt noise arose from the crowd as we aided them to a win. One fan even made the lower level his stage by standing on the railing while yelling get up and flexing his bicep, it was hysterical.

My epiphany had reached its peak as I came to the realization that I don’t have enough fun. Concerns about work, school, and the future often hinder my ability to be carefree. I came to the conclusion that Saturday night that I need to find a balance; a happy medium between work, school, and play. Now the challenge becomes change…
